The Acting Director-General of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Maintenance Department (FEMD), Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, has issued a stern warning — only qualified professionals should be engaged in building projects within the territory.
Speaking exclusively to Chronicles of Construction following the recent collapse of a three-story building in the Life Camp area of Abuja, Engr. Mohammed emphasized that professionalism is not negotiable when it comes to construction safety.
He urged builders to inspect their foundations thoroughly and correct any anomalies without delay, especially during the ongoing rainy season when structures are more vulnerable.
The Acting DG further cautioned against the use of substandard and counterfeit building materials, stressing that such materials have been a major contributor to the rising cases of building collapse across Nigeria.
While addressing the incident, Engr. Mohammed expressed gratitude to FEMD stakeholders, particularly construction companies, for their swift and coordinated response to emergencies.
According to Chronicles of Construction reports, the collapsed building — still under construction — trapped three people. Two victims were rescued almost immediately, while the third was pulled out hours later with a broken leg.
The message from FEMD is clear: building safety starts with engaging the right professionals, using the right materials, and adhering to the highest construction standards.
