LEADERSHIP, POLICY, AND GOVERNANCE — THE BIG TALK

When Architects talk leadership: a CPDP to remember

If you ever doubted that architects can talk about leadership beyond blueprints and building codes, then you clearly missed the Continuous Professional Development Program (CPDP) organized by the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) Abuja Chapter at the Exclusive Serene Hotel, Abuja.

Let’s just say — it was architecture meets politics meets inspiration, and of course, The Chronicles of Construction was right there, lenses and mics on standby, capturing every insightful moment (and a few smiles too).

The theme of the day, “Leadership, Policy, and Governance,” wasn’t just another conference headline — it was a mirror held up to the times. The keynote speaker, Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, Dean of the School of Politics, Policy and Governance (SPPG), wasted no time setting the tone.

Starting strong with a quote from Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, she reminded everyone that leadership isn’t about fancy titles but about mobilizing, motivating, influencing, coordinating, and actually getting things done.
In her words, “If you don’t have good leaders, it becomes difficult to direct society in a manner that leads to growth and development.” Emphasis was also made on Character.

She wrapped up her keynote with a powerful reminder: leaders must live the values they preach.
And that, dear reader, hit like a well-drawn plan on a clean sheet of tracing paper.

The event saw a great turnout of brilliant minds and passionate hearts. In attendance were top leaders of the institute including:

  • Arc. Sani Saulawa, FNIA – the incoming President of NIA
  • Arc. Chioma Wogu-Ogbonna – the 2nd Vice President
  • Arc. (Dr.) John Bawa, MNIA – Chair, Student Affairs Committee

and as is tradition with the Abuja Chapter, no soldier was left behind — the students were not just attendees but part of the conversation. After all, tomorrow’s leaders were in the room, soaking in the wisdom and perhaps sketching leadership notes in between design ideas.

If there was ever a panel that could make “governance” sound exciting, this was it. Moderated by the ever-charismatic Arc. Agatha Odigie , the session featured an impressive lineup:
Arc. Muyiwa Ige, Arc. David Majekodunmi, Arc. Enobong Ekwere, Arc. Agathachristie Irabor, Arc. Moses Ajah, and Arc. Ninah Briggs.

Each speaker shared personal journeys through leadership — from running chapters to handling public offices, to managing private firms. Their collective message was loud and clear:
Architects don’t just build structures; they build systems, teams, and societies.

The conversation echoed with stories of impact, integrity, and innovation — proof that leadership, when done right, can shape not just skylines but mindsets.

The Chapter Chair – Arc Yemi Sola-Adebiyi expressed heartfelt appreciation to all fellows, members, and students who made the event successful — reminding everyone that growth in architecture isn’t just about mastering form and function, but also governance and good leadership.

.

For The Chronicles of Construction, it was yet another fulfilling day of documenting excellence — where leadership met design, and inspiration flowed as freely as post-event refreshments.

So, the next time you think architects only talk about walls and roofs, remember this CPDP. We talk leadership, we talk governance, and we design change.
