FG Launches Digital Portal to Tackle Housing Estate Fraud in Nigeria

By Nehemiah Anini for The Chronicles of Construction

The Federal Government has taken a bold step to protect Nigerians from one of the most persistent problems in the housing sector — fraudulent activities in housing estates.

Through the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (FMHUD), a new digital fraud reporting portal has been launched, giving Nigerians a simple, safe, and transparent way to report scams, upload evidence, and track the progress of their complaints.

The platform is designed to make reporting fraud as straightforward as possible:

  • Citizens can submit complaints and attach supporting evidence.
  • The Ministry will review cases in partnership with professional bodies, law enforcement agencies, and the judiciary.
  • Users can track progress in real-time, ensuring accountability and transparency in every case.

Speaking at the launch, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, explained that this initiative aligns with the 2012 National Housing Policy, which emphasizes:

  • Stronger regulation of the housing industry.
  • Certification of estate developers.
  • Protection of citizens from fraudulent practices.
  • A more efficient administrative, legal, and regulatory framework for housing delivery.

The Minister stressed: “This is about protecting citizens and ensuring professionals in the built environment uphold integrity and accountability.”

Alongside the fraud portal, the Ministry also introduced the Contract Performance and Compliance Project Monitoring System (CPCPMS).

This system will:

  • Track the progress of housing projects in real time.
  • Measure contractor performance against key indicators.
  • Centralize documents such as Bills of Quantities, project reports, and payment certificates.

According to Dr. Marcus Amiolemen, Deputy Director and Head of ICT at the Ministry, both platforms reflect the government’s renewed commitment to service delivery and citizen protection.

The fraud portal was developed in partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to ensure effective tracking and prosecution of offenders.

For decades, fraudulent housing estate deals have left many Nigerians — from professionals to everyday citizens — stranded, cheated, or left with half-completed promises.

By creating a transparent system, the Federal Government hopes to restore public trust, safeguard investments, and make the housing sector more attractive for both local and international stakeholders.

This is not just a victory for individuals — it is a step forward for the entire built environment.

Fraud in housing is not just a financial issue; it is a matter of trust, safety, and national development.

With the launch of this portal, Nigerians now have a powerful tool to fight back — and every professional, estate developer, and citizen must play their part in using it responsibly.

At The Chronicles of Construction, we will continue to monitor and share updates on how this system reshapes the housing landscape for everyone.
