Jigawa Government Approves ₦575m Embankment and Dyke Project to Tackle Flooding

The Jigawa State Government has approved ₦575 million for the rehabilitation of an embankment and dyke along the Gambara–Waza–Dutse Road, a vital corridor linking rural communities to the state capital.

The project aims to control flooding, protect the road infrastructure, and improve the free flow of traffic — a critical move towards safeguarding both lives and livelihoods affected by seasonal flood challenges.

Announcing the approval after the State Executive Council meeting in Dutse, the Commissioner for Information, Youths, Sports, and Culture, Sagir Musa, told The Chronicles of Construction that the project aligns with Governor Umar Namadi’s commitment to environmental sustainability, economic growth, and social development.

“The rehabilitation of the embankment on Waza, located along the Gambara–Waza–Dutse Road, is very vital due to its critical condition. The intervention aims at flood mitigation and protecting a major access route to the state capital,” Musa explained.

He noted that once completed, the Waza embankment will serve as a strategic flood defense, improving mobility between rural and urban areas while boosting trade, agriculture, and community safety.

In addition to the flood control initiative, the State Executive Council also approved an organogram for the newly established Ministry of Livestock Development — a significant structural step toward transforming Jigawa’s agricultural landscape.

According to Commissioner Musa, the ministry’s creation is a milestone in Governor Namadi’s development vision, focusing on livestock value chain enhancement, food security, and rural economic empowerment.

“With the approved organogram, the ministry is now positioned to commence full operations with a clearly defined structure. It will efficiently coordinate policies, initiate programmes, and drive innovation in animal health services and livestock entrepreneurship across the state,” he said.

The commissioner further stated that both initiatives — the flood control project and the establishment of the new ministry — align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes agricultural diversification, sustainable development, and inclusive economic growth.

Together, they mark a strategic effort by the Jigawa State Government to protect the environment, strengthen infrastructure, and unlock rural prosperity through well-coordinated interventions.
