LIVE FROM ABAKALIKI: THE FUTURE OF SAFE CONSTRUCTION TAKES CENTER STAGE
In the heart of Abakaliki, a powerful dialogue on the future of Nigeria’s built environment recently took place, setting a new benchmark for professional discourse and government collaboration. The event, focused on builders’ regulation and the imperative of safe construction, wasn’t just another seminar—it was a definitive statement from the highest echelons of government and the construction industry.
The Chronicles of Construction was on the ground to capture this historic occasion, which was a clear indicator of the government’s commitment to building a safer and more sustainable nation. The attendance was a true testament to the event’s importance, with an extraordinary representation from key government figures. Dignitaries included the Honorable Minister of Urban and Housing, Arc. Ahmend Dangiwa fnia, several Deputy State Governors from various states, and the esteemed Honorable Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly.
The proceedings were chaired by a titan of Nigerian politics, the former Senate President Senator Pius Anyim Pius, whose presence underscored the national significance of the discussions. A pivotal moment was the delivery of a powerful keynote address by the Governor of the State, His Excellency, the Right Honorable Bldr. Francis Ogbonna Erishi Nwifuru fniob. His insightful words resonated deeply with everyone in attendance and set the tone for the day’s deliberations.
In his opening address, the Chairman of the event, Bldr. Samson Ameh Opaluwah fniob, took a moment to appreciate the Governor and his dedication to making Ebonyi State great. He then reflected on the remarkable strides made by the 7th Council of the Registered Builders under his leadership, sharing the council’s unwavering commitment to promoting excellence and professionalism. He explained that their agenda had been centered on fostering innovation and global recognition for Nigeria’s building industry. This commitment was first articulated at the institute’s 52nd AGM conference in Akure in 2022 and reinforced at the 53rd and 54th AGMs in Jos and Awka, respectively.
Consequently, they have pursued strategies to eradicate building collapse, professionalize the building practice, forge strong international and local partnerships, and embrace technological advancements. He went on to highlight some of the significant progress of the 7th council and the building profession in Nigeria:
- Strengthened Registration and Certification Processes: The council has ensured that only qualified and competent individuals are admitted into the esteemed profession. Additionally, they have widened the registration net with an approval for the registration of technologists, technicians, and craftsmen. This ensures all critical operatives in the building delivery process are recognized, regulated, and technically equipped to perform optimally.
- Improved Regulatory Frameworks: The 7th council has worked tirelessly to strengthen the regulatory frameworks governing the profession. This includes the development of building practice instruments, building health and safety regulations, and building project monitoring tools. Specifically, the “Operational Regulation for Building Practice in Nigeria” and “Health and Safety Regulation for Building Sites in Nigeria” have now been approved by the Honorable Minister for Urban and Housing Development, Arc. Ahmend Dangiwa fnia, who was also present at the event.
The convergence of such influential leaders—from legislative representatives to executive office holders—sent a clear message: the future of safe construction is a priority for all. This was not merely a meeting of professionals; it was a gathering of nation-builders committed to forging a new path forward. The discussions were rich, the commitment was palpable, and the outcomes will undoubtedly shape the standards and practices of the built environment for years to come.
