On August 13, 2025, the Nigerian steel industry took center stage at the National Steel Summit, an educational and highly informative program organized by the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development. The event was graced by His Excellency, Vice President Kashim Shettima, alongside industry leaders, manufacturers, raw material suppliers, and stakeholders who are shaping the future of Nigeria’s steel and iron sector.
For those who think little progress is happening in the building industry, this summit was a powerful reminder that the foundation of construction starts with steel — and conversations about its availability, processing, and authenticity are more important than ever.

Steel remains one of the most critical materials in construction. From residential housing to bridges, skyscrapers, and industrial projects, almost every building project relies on steel. Yet, in Nigeria, many professionals and citizens remain unaware of:
- Who the genuine manufacturers are
- Where raw materials are sourced
- How much potential the sector holds for national development
The summit addressed these gaps head-on, bringing insights directly from the organizations at the heart of Nigeria’s steel value chain.
The summit was not just ceremonial; it was loaded with technical insights and hard data from the major players in the industry, including:
- KAM Holdings Ltd – Pioneers in steel manufacturing with wide national reach.
- Ajaokuta Mines and Steel – The symbolic heart of Nigeria’s steel journey.
- Quantum Steel Nigeria Ltd – Expanding opportunities in quality steel products.
- African Natural Mines & Steel – Delivering innovation in the metals sector.
- National Steel Raw Materials Exploration Agency – Focused on resource mapping and sustainability.
A standout moment came from Mr. Femi Abiodun of the National Iron Ore Mining Company (NIOMCO). He revealed that:
- Nigeria has about 200 million tons of dedicated iron ore reserves at Itakpe.
- NIOMCO has the capacity to produce 2.15 million tons annually of 63–64% iron (Fe) concentrate and 67–68% premium Fe grade super concentrate.
- The sector has the potential to generate over 500,000 direct and indirect jobs.
- Deliveries from NIOMCO already serve Ajaokuta Steel Company, Delta Steel Company, and other industries — creating a backbone for Nigeria’s industrial growth.
